Today I read, It Take a Whole Village [or High School] by Karl Fisch. This was a very inspiring event that took place at Heritage High School. This goes to show how much a community of people can achieve by determination. Even though Heritage is our biggest rival, it is times like these that make a realize what an amazing school they are.

On April 16-20 2007, Heritage High School accomplished something that helped the World. On that week, 1,637 students gave 14, 014.43 dollars this raised 102, 50k bags of rice for starving people in Sierra Leon. One student traveled to Sierra Leon to help distribute the rice and learn about the people living there, it was said that the screams and cheers when the food arrived was unbelievable. This is simply amazing that Heritage was able to come together and help out a struggling nation. Why can't all of the high schools do this?

At Arapahoe High School we have been helping out less fortunate people as well. Toys for Tots is the most recent activity to help people that are far less fortunate than us. Arapahoe exceeded the goal of giving 1000 presents to children kindergarten - 5th grade. Raising about 1900 presents is something that our school can be proud of. This is an incredible accomplishment and is helping kids who may not get anything on Christmas except that. ALL schools should have fundraising for people who are struggling. Helping others out is a great feeling and if all schools had fundraisers and came together we can help the world little by little and start to make a huge difference.

Today I read Why are Kids Failing, this post talks about a teacher that has done everything to try and help her students but they still do not cooperate. Mrs. Davis, a 9th grade teacher has lowered the standards for her 9th grade class. She is doing her best to try to get her students to succeed and realize the importance of grades, but they still continue to slack and let her down.

Failing is a difficult thing to do. As long as we do our homework and do our best most likely we will have a acceptable grade. Mrs. Davis has done multiple things to merely try to get her students to do there homework but it its not successful, she asks the question why are kids failing?

Being freshman, some kids don't realize how important our grades our. Some kids believe that its just the beginning of high school and we can do whatever we please and grades aren't an issue. This is completely untrue, grades in high school, all four years determine our future. I believe that this may be why there has been so many difficulties in her class. I also think that teenagers do not have the determination to work on their grades and succeed. It has gotten so bad that she had to lower the standards a lot and they still won't do what they are supposed to. All they have to do is do there homework, if they do bad, they can redo it until they get 100%, how hard is that? I do not have the opportunity to do anything like that, a lot of kids don't and these kids are taking advantage of it.

We all get what we deserve, and the teenagers that refuse to try to succeed in school will realize they messed up. No teacher likes to see there students fail, but there's only so much the teacher can do. Its on the students shoulders to decide to do there work or not and if they don't, they will regret it. Mrs Davis' tactics are good, and the students need to work on their attitude toward grades and spend more time working on school work.

Today I read a post about Online Harassment. This post was about a girl who was harassed online and eventually ended up committing suicide. Megan Meier was only thirteen years old and began talking to a sixteen year old boy on myspace. She liked this boy until he began making fun of her and calling her names. This one boy was not the only one harassing her, others began to join in. A few days before her birthday she killed herself.

Online harassment can have a tragic outcome. Like in Megan Meier's case it was death. I believe that people should monitor their kids on the Internet. If their teenager was acting strange then the parents should investigate and find the source of the problem. Their are to many people out in the world trying to harass teens to not do anything about it. Parents should not allow young kids on sites like myspace. Teens that are mature enough to know not to talk to strangers or give out information should be the only ones allowed on these sites. Teens need to know their limits.

Today I read a new post called Lindsay Lohan Arrested Again For DUI; Reportedly Checks Back Into Rehab. This was an interesting article. Lindsey Lohan has been making some really bad decisions lately and wrecking her career as an actress. She needs to get help, and stay in Rehab, not check out a few weeks or months later. She has to pay for her actions.

Most people think that just because she is a celebrity she should be treated differently. I completely disagree with this. Celebrity or not, we are all equal and have equal rights. For Lindsey Lohan, this isn't her first time messing up, she has done this multiple times. It is time for her to become more mature and get what she deserves.

Lindsey Lohan has been setting a bad example for everyone. Her fans have been let down by her. She has a lot of young fans and are going to wonder what happened to her when they don't see her in movies anymore. After rehab, it will be extremely difficult for her to get work after her record. She should not be receiving special treatment and needs to face what she has done.

Today i read Do Schools have Birth Control. This post talks about how schools are deciding if they should give out birth control in schools. Giving out birth control in middle schools is ridiculous. Middle schools kids should not be doing any of that. By giving out birth control they are saying that it is okay to have sex. They should be educating there students and telling them to wait.

I think that birth control should be given out in High Schools. In high schools teenage girls drop out because of pregnancies. Giving out birth control may lessen the amount. Even though it is not right to be doing this in high school, people are still going to. Giving out birth control will be safer and hopefully help.

Today I read We Can't Stop It. This was a touching post because it talks about how firefighters are risking their lives to but out these treacherous wild fires. There is no way to completely stop these fires, they are out of control. Firefighters are doing their best to control and protect as much land and homes as they can, but it isn't doing much good. We need to get more firefighters out their to help prevent more of these.

Thousands of homes and even lives have been lost to these fires. California has the worst wild fires, and they are destroying everything in their path. Prevention of these wildfires happen even before the fire. Their are ways to help lessen these fires. So many people have lost their homes and belongings. We need to work continually to settle the fires. I cannot imagine what I would do if my house burned to the ground due to a wildfire. These people must be devastated. Firefighters are true hero's, they put other peoples lives before their own and are doing their best.

One wildfire that has been going on is said to burn until it reaches the ocean. Even though it is hard to realize, there is not much they can do about it. Wildfires just keep going, especially with the increased wind and hot weather. We need to keep water on the areas and do our very best to prevent more homes and people from being hurt.

Today i read a post called Parent and Internet Using Teens. This post talks about how teens are being affected by using the internet to much. Parents need to monitor how much time children are spending on the internet. To much time on the internet can become addicting and eventually be all they do. Their are so many other ways to interact, the internet should not be used as a main source to do that.

A lot of parents do not realize how much time there child is spending on the internet. This needs to change. Even though the internet has a lot of useful qualities, their are also sites that can corrupt someone. Parents just need to watch and limit the time teens are allowed on the computer. Why sit at home on the computer when you can get out and interact with actual people?

Computers are useful, but to much use is harmful. The internet is huge, there are few things that you can't do or access on the internet these days. Kids especially need to realize this, they also need to realize that its not the end of the world if they can't always be on the computer. Their are so many other things to do and we don't need to spend so much time on the internet. Even though it has its down sides, using it in classrooms and for work is an excellent way of learning.

Today I read the post Google Maps Tracking Fires. This post talks about how Google Maps show where fires are in California. This isn't just a step forward for California, but for the World. This shows how we have been progressing in saving lives. This could be the first of many steps that can help us save lives.

Using Google Maps to alert people about fires is important. This will let people know what is going on and how they can prevent a tragedy can happen. The bigger picture is, it that we are discovering new ways to save people lives. What can be better than that? Even though this has only happened in California, it will begin to spread to other states and will save even more people.

It is tools like these that we are in need of. We can expand even more and eventually we will. Saving people and even land is especially important. Knowing where and when a fire is happening will alert people to stay away and stay safe. Using Google Maps will get it across the state in a matter of seconds. We are beginning to develop useful tools that can help us out so much and eventually we can create even more.

Today i read Scott, Double Amputee. This was a very inspiring post for me personally. This post was about a man named Scott Rigsby. He has prosthetic legs and he still found the strength and courage to complete an iron man. This was simply incredible, this man trained and completed an iron man in 16.42 minutes when the maximum time to complete it was 17 minutes. The most amazing thing was that he didn't do it for himself, he did it to change the world.

a wounded veteran approached Rigsby after a practice swim and told him, "You have got to finish this race because you can change the world...

Scott Rigsby had done an iron man once before and failed. This shows how much determination this man has. He did not just give up and move on to somethings new, he got right back up and pushed himself to prepare and finish this race. If only all of us could have that kind of determination. Having prosthetics legs didn't hold Scott back, somebody with that kind of injury would usually make us think that he could not doing something as astonishing as this, but he proved everyone wrong.

The world should and probably will look up to Scott Rigsby. He shows us that we can do so much more than we think we can. With determination and strength we can do anything we set out to do. We can change the world, just as Scott has done. Even the littlest things make a difference. Their are so many people with disabilities that think they cannot do what they want to, but hearing about what this man has done is exactly the kind of inspiration they need to chase there dreams.

Today I read an article about Filtering. This post talks about how filtering is holding schools back and is going to far. Filtering should not be allowed in schools because they have begun to block sites that could benefit our education. There should be a limit to what we can access at school, but that is why we have rules.

A recent experience of mine shows that filtering school computers is not beneficial. Last week in my history class, we were studying the war and my teacher was trying to get a music video by metallica that she thought showed a little bit about what the war was like. She was trying to show us the video in class but the computer wouldn't allow us to access you tube. This shows how you tube can teach us something, but on our computers it's blocked.

Filtering should not be so censored in schools. Sites like you tube should not be blocked. There are several videos on that site that provide good information. Their should be supervision when a student is on the computer, but sites should not be blocked. Filtering the computer in not needed and students should be trusted to not go on sites that they are not allowed to.

Recently I read the post Give One, Get One by Will Richardson. This was a really important post for me because it is so important to help out the countries that are not as fortunate as us. This post talks about how everytime you buy a laptop for 399 dollars, they give a laptop to a child in a developinig nation. There are so many children in the world who have nothing compared to us, and if we stopped for a minute and did simple things like this, we would be well on our way to helping out other nations.

Buying a laptop to support this program can help out so much. Buying a laptop doesn't just support the child in another nation, but it also gives your own child the opprotunity to expand there learning. Helping out nations that are struggling can be so much easier than people think. Even though it's just one laptop, it can provide learning and opprotunity for so many children who do not have the money to buy their own. If even a hundred people supported this cause, it could help out so much. We need to realize that some nations are struggling and they need our help.

Helping out can be so easy. There are several other programs beside this one that also help out other nations. If you don't need or want a laptop, their are so many other ways to help. We need to help other nations develope in technology and other ways. Many nations are lacking in food, clothing, and even shelter. Donating even small amount of money can provide a better future for these nations.

Recently I read http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2007/09/is-text-only-enough-for-todays-students.html. This feed talks about how writing may not be enought. The most common way of communicating is through writing but how are we supposed to expand if we don't try new things?

Different people learn in different ways. The most common type of learning I hear about today is visual learning. I think I learn the best this way, as well as several other people. I get bored with to much writing or typing and usually don't get into it. I focus much better with visual learning and communicating thigs through words.

Text is probably the most boring ways to learn things. Learning things in an enviroment of people with everybody participating and getting other peoples opinions can help get the attention of others and also embed it in their brains.

I think that we need to expand our horizons and try new teaching methods. More communication through others can open new doors and new learning techniques for everyone.

Recently I read the article http://thefischbowl.blogspot.com/2007/09/is-it-okay-to-be-technologically.html. This article talks about how teachers need to be technologically literate. Karl Fisch believes that all teachers need to be up to date in technology. I agree with this for several reasons. Teachers need to realize that technology is advancing and they need to learn how to use it.

Technology has grown immensly over the past few years. If teachers do not learn how to use this technology than they will fall behind. They will not be able to teach their students bout the ways of the internet and their students will become tecnologically iliterate as well. Living in the 21st century, technology has become so impprtant. Without technology we would be no where.

Teachers and students need to keep up with tecnology. Technology is growing and we have to grow with it. Learning about technology and computers will benefit everyone. In the future we will be able to do things with computers that we have never been able to do before. Technology is especially important for college students. College students use technology daily, and if they don't learn about it in high school they will be lost throughout college.

Teacher knowing the ways of technology will better the learning enviroment for the students. If the students are more literate on technology than the teacher what is the student getting from it? The teacher has to be able to teach the student about new things on the computer or other devices. Technology can help a lot in the classroom, especially laptops. Laptops make it so much easier to learn in the classroom. If teachers don't know how to use them then how are the students supposed to?

Today I read a post called http://thinklab.typepad.com/think_lab/2007/09/is-payment-for-.html. This post asks the question ..

Is Payment for Good Grades Legitimate Motivation in This Day and Age?

Although there are good outcomes from paying a student to get good grades, I don't think it is the best way to approach the subject. Some tests show that when a parent or adult pays their child when they get a good grade actually improves the student academically, it can cause problems in the future.

Paying a student when he or she gets an A gets that person in a routine of receiving something for whenever their grade is high. Even though this is a good thing at that moment in time it may not be so great for the future. When that person goes to college he is still going to rely on his parents for a certain amount of money. If he doesn't recieve that money he may slip through the cracks and fall behind. Our parents can't always be there to send us ten or fifteen dollars for getting an A. We can't depend on that to keep our grades up.

Getting good grades will have a reward for us sooner or later. If we get good grades throughout high school we are guranteed to get into an amazing college. From there, if we get good grades in college we will have a good future. Paying for good things can even go beyond grades. If a student depends on getting money for whenever he or she does something good, it can carry on throughout there life. For example if he gets a job, he may expect to get something from his parents. And maybe its not even money he is expecting, it can go beyond money. Paying them allows the student to not be independent and always rely on someone else.

Recently I read a feed http://davidwarlick.com/2cents/2007/09/16/could-it-happen-here/ by David Warlick. This post talks about a teachers conference in Shanghai. This conference is attended by educators to expand the regular schools criteria. The growth of schools and education in general is an important subject. The United States should hold a meeting as well and help expand schools for the future. A quote by David Warlick asks...
Could something like this happen in the United States?

Why not? The United States can grow as well as Shanghai.

The United States should hold a conference for educators to better schools and their environment. Like Shanghai, we should look in the future and see how we can change it. Their is always room for growth. Holding a conference for educators and bring up so many new ideas and doors for students of the future. Who knows what we can come up with. Holding a conference would allow opportunities for the U.S to grow.

Obviously, educators should attend this conference, but I also think students should be allowed to attend. Not a lot of students should be allowed to come to this conference, but maybe college students from several different colleges. This would allow experienced. Their has been so much growth in the United States with technology, why stop there? Not only can we bring technology to schools across the U.S but new ways to learn.

Today I read "How Much Do You Value Test Scores". I found this feed in "The Fishbowl". Test scores are important but I do not think that they are everything. It is important to do well on any test especially SAT'S. Determining whether someone gets into a school should not be based upon test scores.

School's always look at test scores. I think it plays an important role in whether you get into a school or not. Taking a test to get into a private school is a good example of this. When you apply to Regis you have to take a test. They calculate your score and it is important to do well on the quiz or odds are you probably won't get in.

I don't think that test scores should be that important. Test scores in general are important but they shouldn't be the main importance to schools. Some kids have difficulties taking tests and are under a lot of pressure. These kids may have excellent grades though. Schools should focus more on the actual homework grades rather than test scores.

I chose to read http://www.denverpost.com/ci_6884539?source=rssdpp. I thought that this feed was important because so many men and woman are in Iraq and Afghanistan right now. Their are a lot of soldiers who have been back and forth in Iraq for years. It is important that they get to come home and see their friends, family and loved ones again. The soldiers need to be united with their loved ones.

A lot of things can change in a few years. Some of the soldiers have not been home in years. Everything could have changed in that amount of time. They need to go home and catch up with everyone and keep in touch with loved ones. I can't imagine if someone in my family was sent off to Iraq and was gone for months or years at a time.
"The more successful we are, the more American troops can return home."
I just hope that we are successful so some of our troops can come home.

In fifth grade I had a religion teacher named Mr. Warner. He was in his mid-twenties and he was still figuring out what he wanted to do with his life. I can honestly say that he was the best teacher I have ever had. He always made learning fun and exciting and knew us better than any other teacher, he wasn't their just to teach us the things we needed to know, he was their to get to know us and help us with anything. While he was good at teaching, he wanted to pursue his dream of being in the military. He left us at the end of the year and went off to train. We received letters from him often and our teacher read them to us. A while after we found out that he would be fighting in Iraq. I was worried but also happy for him that he finally found out what he wanted to do and support our country.

It takes a lot of bravery to risk your life for other people. Soldiers are fighting for us. This doesn't just include the United States, the military is also trying to make Iraq and Afghanistan a better place. The danger in those countries is incredibly high. I am always hearing about bombings and murder. It is terrible what is going on in Iraq right now.

There are several things that we can do to support our troops. My dad found a organization where families and individuals can send a box of goods to a solidi er. We have done this two years in a row so far, and it feels good to know that we are doing something good and helping out someone who is fighting for us. We sent a big box of food and goods to our particular solidi er. In return he sent us a letter thinking us and telling us how much he appreciates it. It was great to learn more about what is going on and that the soldiers are so genuine and care so much about tour country.

Today I chose to read "Teachers to broach 9/11 carefully, if at all". I found this entry under the Denver Post. This feed seemed appropriate because today is 9/11. When I was reading this entry several thoughts kept running through my head. Some of the things that were said were a little bit shocking. September 11 was a terrible tragedy and should be remembered forever.

September 11, 2001 was one of the most horrific days the world has ever seen. Schools and work places need to remember this day. It is important that we think about and pray for those Innocent people who were lost that day. Thousands of people lost loved ones, even young kids died form this terrorist attack. Four United States planes were hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon and the Twin Towers. According to CNN 2973 people died on this day just six years ago.

The fact that schools and work places are not educating their students about this day is ridiculous. Kids especially need to know about this day in history. A lot of children do not remember what happened this day because they were to young. We need to remind them how many people were lost. They need to understand that things happen and sometimes people can get hurt or even killed. Schools need to teach them that it is not OK to hurt others or do wrong to others. If we do not teach young kids these lessons than when they get older, they may not fully understand the concept of not injuring others.

I remember September 11, 2001 vividly. I was at my neighbors house to carpool for school. I was standing their waiting for everyone, when we were on our way out the door I glanced at the television and could not believe my eyes. I was only eight years old and I wasn't sure what had happened, I only had a few seconds to comprehend the image on the screen of the burning building. When i go to the school the teachers were all listening to the radio. I remember sitting in my classroom listening to my teacher explain what was going on and tell us that the United States was under attack. All that day, we listened to the radio. I had never experienced anything this dramatic in my life. The thought of all the people who lost loved ones is unbelievable.

In this feed, it was mention that only few recent U.S history books had much to say about 9/11. September 11 is such an important date in U.S history. If it is not put in history books eventually it will be forgotten. The history books that it was mentioned in included limited information. Four out of nine text books talked about how many people were killed, and who was responsible for it.

9/11 was a big deal. Schools are starting to act like it is not. Teachers should educate children and teens about it. Young kids should know that not everyone in the World does the right thing. If they don't learn this when they are young they will be ignorant about the situation as they get older and won't be prepared for it when they do find out. We can't let September 11, 2001 be forgotten, it is to important.
